CD cover final versions

From the most recent CD cover edit i used the same image for the front cover and added the text 'daft punk' to the record as before. Instead of using the pink font for the text, I wanted to echo the banner font within the CD cover. I also used part of the banner image and made it look tattered as I did on the website. In my opinion this CD cover is a better match to the website.

For the front cover we planned to use the image I have composed and now added to the back cover. We decided against this so that our digipak would be a better match to the website.

The way in which i made this image is shown below:

I took an extreme close up of Harriet's eyes, making sure i lit her well so that the colours were vibrant.

I then edited the image in Photoshop using the filter 'glowing edges' and increasing the edge width and edge brightness so that the colours appear vibrant.

I wanted to take the image blurry but because i needed clear, vibrant colours I used the motion blur filter horizontally. I then cut out the image using the magic eraser and placed it on the light drawing ball i made.

CD Cover development

I wanted to make the CD cover and website look as much of a package as possible and so i tried using the same kind of colour schemes. However, we feel that these compositions are too simple and need more layers and complex imagery. Also, it doesn't differ enough from the website.

I like the fact that the pink spray paint on the floor is complimented by the pink splats on the back cover and writing on the LP.

Light Drawing Edits

I used Photoshop to edit the light drawing that i did.

To create the background i altered the contrast until the image behind the light was black.

In the image above i used layers of the light from one image and then altered the colouring.

For these images i just made the whole of it blue and brighter.

I added an effect to this drawing called neon glow and then selected the colour as pink.

Light Drawing Experiments

I finally got to do the light drawing. I went out one night with my friend who showed me how to do different things with the light. For every image we used a long shutter speed on the camera to capture all the light we used.

You have to make sure the torch is not pointed directly at the camera otherwise a star of bright light shows up in the image.

In the image above we used a stick with lots of torches attached to it and swung it around in a circular motion to crate a ball.

For these images below we used a circle of wire with LED wire wrapped around it and moved the object around in different ways to achieve different effects. For the one directly below, I moved the hoop away from the camera in a straight line to create a tunnel.

With this one, we came in from the side with the hoop and wavered it up and down which creates a pipe.

For the image below we wavered the object closer to the camera which gave this staggered circle effect that looks really unusual.

We also did the same for this image, but started a bit further back wavering the hoop around. This gave more circles on the image.

To create the spiral we moved the hoop in a circular motion side to side.

For the two drawings below, both of us had a torch and ran around waving it randomly high and low.

Late college bus 6/12/10

With my college bus being held up really badly today I missed most of our lesson and wasn't able to work on anything much. also, I was unable to get hold of my photos from the light drawing session i did a week ago because the snow fall meant it was impossible to get anywhere.


Today, i managed to find the right font and colouring for the CD cover.

Cover:

·        Bright psychedelic metallic lettering on CD cover

·        The font is their signature style and appears on everything they own.

·        Silver metallic writing Is futuristic and out of the ordinary which links to their electronic style

·        Black background makes it striking and eye catching.

·        Instructions towards entering “The Daft Punk club” in 6 stages.   

·        Written in black and white which is a striking contrast

·        Illustrations of computers to make it clear.

Booklet:

·        Illustration of two people dressed in black bike gear with bike helmets on, in a recording studio.

·        Links with the abstract alternative genre which attracts the audience.

The layout and font and its effect

Front cover:

·        The front cover says “daft punk” in “daft writing” which is daft punks own personal owned font which makes it immediately recognisable.

·        The title is written at an angle in the centre of the front cover which makes it the main image that people will read.

Inside sleeve:

·        The inside sleeve is written in block capital font in white writing so it is easier to read as it is much smaller print.

Booklet:

·        There is no writing on this image. This is to attract the attention to the illustration and style of the daft punk DJ’s.

                   The image and style – how does it sell the artist/band?

Front cover: 

·        Electronic/futuristic image to gain the attention of the audience as it is a unique style.

Inside sleeve:

·        Instructions in a robotic format consisting of computers resemble their image as electronic which matches their electronic genre.

Booklet:

·        Shows the DJ’s in the recording studio, wearing bike helmets, its unusual therefore this makes the audience want to know what unusual music they have created.

Inside sleeve:

·        Collective bright images of people, posters, the band. Densely packed full of interesting images links to the exciting up beat music in the electro, pop, alternative genre.

                    Mise - en – scene and its meaning/effect:

Front cover:

-          The front cover consists of a colourful striped background and the name of the band in the foreground. The name is in black and white to contrast with the background.

-          The meaning of this is to show that the band is quite bright, energetic and fun with a poppy-rave style

Inside sleeve:

-          The inside sleeve is brightly coloured with a mish-mash of images. This emphasizes the styles of their songs. Some are more hard-edged and others are more poppy.

               The layout and font and its effect:

Front cover:

-          The layout on the cover is very basic. The title name is centred and easily visible. The font is white, bold, and quite funky inside a black box and works really well against the striped background.

Inside sleeve:

-          There’s quite a lot of text on the inside sleeve. The text is rather small and sometimes hidden by pictures. They look like band posters; the kind you’d see advertised music venues.

-          The layout is quite chaotic but has decent arrangement. This consists of text then people then more text then the band itself. The pictures of the band members are bigger than the rest to clearly show who they are.

                   The image and style – how does it sell the artist/band?

Front cover:

-          On the cover there’s no image of the band so it’s rather difficult to judge the band on their appearance, however, just by looking at the pattern it may conjure some ideas. Someone may look at it and think “the colourful stripes make me think that the band is quite funky and energetic and their songs have an upbeat rhythm”. These ideas would sell to a young adult audience; the kind that enjoys parties and having fun.

Inside sleeve:

-          On the inside sleeve you can get more of an idea of the band’s image and style. The large amount of posters shows that the band is quite famous and popular.

-          The pictures of the band member show that they’re all casual and ordinary people by looking at the way they dress.

Digipak Design for Our Music Video.

1/ we would like our digipak to be similar to other artist’s digipak’s within the same genre so that our target audience can distinctly recognise our CD cover as an alternative, electro, experimental CD. However, we would like to be slightly more unique than simply copying the idea’s of other artists by going at it from a slightly different angle.

We plan on having an extreme close up of one of our dancer’s eyes which will be extravagantly decorated with glitter, face paint and false eyelashes. This will be on the front cover surrounded by oval shaped light drawings in different colours and directions on a black background. We plan to have this on the actual CD itself also. For back of the CD we would have 1-5 track titles in block colours against a black background along with 3 U.V painted faces on the left.

For the inner sleeve we would take a picture of a prop we made which was a paper masher, red painted button saying “Start Daft Music” which links with the artist name “Daft Punk”.

2/As I explained above the mis – en – scene will be colourful and eye-catching; our desired effect for this would be a futuristic quirky CD cover that will attract our target audience.

3/ We plan to use “Daft Font” as Daft Punk use for majority of their writing style. This is so that our audience recognise immediately that it is a song by Daft Punk.

4/The use of light drawing is extremely futuristic which is what daft punk is related to. The “Start Daft Music” button resembles an electrical process in which when the button is pressed the reaction will be music playing, we believe this links to the electro style and genre that Daft Punk posses.

Digipak Design

For our digipak we want to use images we took while filiming to build up a design for the reverse of the digipak. Also, we are going to use light drawing to create colourful shapes for our front cover and CD insert. As well as the light drawing we want to create a blurred image of a face to go behind the light drawing as it will give an unusual effect.

Character CD Cover Experiments

From the images that Emma took at our filming session i used the character ones to experiment with techniques for our CD Cover. To achieve these results i used Photoshop and added filters then changed the colouring.

I think the effect 'Glowing Edges', which I added to the images below works really well for our genre. My favourite of the experiments so far is the one directly below in which i altered the colouring to purple tones using the sliders in Photoshop.

CD Cover Experiments

Below are some photos I took to try out ideas for the CD cover we will create for our artist, Daft Punk. With the genre of Electro being everything a bit crazy I thought it would be great to try out some blurring techniques. I achieved these images by pressing down the shutter of my camera halfway to focus on the object then when this was done I pressed the shutter down fully whilst extending or compressing the focal length as I took the photo.

I love the above image and the lines created coming out from the laptop in all directions. Hopefully i will achieve this effect with an actor from our music video or a prop involved in it.

With this photo, i love the way that the eyes pop out at you, which grabs the attention of the audience as well as the bright colours. I think this image fits the conventions of electro well.
