Editing
Here are some of the edits we have used in today's lesson. After completing the music video, we decided to then use a different edit for each location to create a clear separation between the locations.
We used the "Colour TV" edit on imovie and changed the width so that the various colours were more striking and bold. We believe this suits our genre as it is conceptual and has many elements that suit the style of Daft Punk.
Here we have used the "Mirror" edit to make an interesting illusion of characters appearing from nowhere we believed this matches our conceptual theme.
We put a keyboard on the floor of the green screen and used "green screen smooth" edit to use the foil from the background of one of locations to use as the background for the green screen.

Feedback on our video
In today's lesson we were asked to watch each others videos, which was useful to find out what we were doing wrong and how to improve upon it.
Our audience gave our video excellent in every category, but picked up on the fact that the banana scene was too slow for the music and could even be put on double time rather than slow motion or standard. Other than that point, we we're told that our creativity and shot material was appropriate to our genre with varied shots.

Shots from filming
For this filming session we used material to dance with. The screenshot below shows one of our dancers rolling up the material and flicking it towards the camera to cover the entire screen. We wanted it to do this so that all you can see is red at the end of the shot.
The shot below is a close up of one of the dancers with their mask on. This is from a part we filmed of each dancer filling the screen with their head and going around in a circle. We plan to cut this up so that the head appears to jump from place to place and then add an effect over the clip.

Filming 8/12/10
We needed to re-film our dancing in the performance studio and so we did. However, one of our dancers couldn't make it so we had to replace them. This is not a problem because we are only using footage from this filming session in this location and the dancers are masked.
We used material to dance with to create visual interest. We chose red because it would show up well against the black background.

Editing
So far we have found our footage to be successful as the dancing is in time with the beat of the music and is fairly easy to slot into the video at most points. We roughly have less than about 30 seconds of footage left that we need to paste over black before we have a complete video.
Last lesson we started editing some of the footage with the ghost trails and speed up effects to give an impression of robotic malfunction as Emma described in a previous post, however the group decided that it would be easier and much more efficient if we leave the editing until last once we have filled all gaps in the music video.
We filmed roughly 2/3 weeks ago in the dance studio in college and when we imported the footage we noticed that the curtains in the studio had gaps in causing daylight to shine through the windows and generally make the footage seem quite tacky. Therefor, we are re-filming this section today.
We are also giving ourself more time to film as last time we only had a half an hour gap between 15:30 and 16:00 due to enrichment in the studio. Whereas today we are filming between 15:30 and 17:30 giving ourself more time to check the setting and framing.

Todays Lesson - 6/12/10
In today's lesson we focused our time on our music video. The first half an hour to hour was spent on splitting clips and adding the right effects to them. The clips we were mainly looking at were the head and body jerks. The effects were chose on these were the "Fast/Slow Reverse" and the "Ghost Trails". It took us a while to choose the best speed and the opacity for the ghost trails but we got there in the end.
Our next task is to re-film a dance sequence in the dance studio at college. We have planned to shoot from 3:30pm til 5:30pm on Wednesday 8th December. Our teacher Mel will stay with us during the shoot to give us help when we need it.
We chose to have the Ghost Trails settings at:
Effect In: 00:00
Effect Out: 04:18
Tail: Long
Steps: Long
Opacity: Opaque
We chose these settings because we wanted to be able to see the multiple trails as Harriet Gibson's head moves. We are going to use these exact settings for each body and head jerk clips.

The project deadline has been forwarded to January 2011. This will give us plenty of time if we need to re-film.

- Re-film dancing in performance studio
- Ninja 'Look out now!'
- Material movement
- Re-film dancing in performance studio
As a group we decided that the footage we got from filming in the performance studio was poor and so we want to re-film. The problem was that we had to rush filming because we only had 30 minutes to record by the time that the studio was free.
We plan to re-film next on 30/11/10 at lunch. We will then continue to film at lunches until we have finished and at a last resort we will use the enrichment time on 8/12/10 until we have finished what we need to capture.
--------------
So we know exactly what we need to film, we have created a shot by shot plan for each scene as our written storyboard is wrong in some areas because of the decision to not go ahead with the paint fight.

Filming 24/11/10
Above are photographs of the location we used for filming today. We thought the setting would fit well with our other footage because of the graffiti in both locations.
I took this photo through the basketball court fence which we have filmed a few shots through. We think it adds interest to the footage.
In the image above you can see our dancers practising the routine. Whilst we weren't filming, coats we're kept on because the temperature was freezing.
With the weather being so cold today we didn't get as much filmed as we had hoped. This means we will film the rest of our music video in the performance studio and edit the colours so they are vivid.

Change of Plan
We have decided that we need to change some of the scenes we planned to film for our video. In particular the paint fight because of its messy nature and difficulty to make look impressive. It wouldn't be appropriate to film this scene in any of our locations because two are indoor (Aliss' garage and college performance studio) and the third is a public space (park in nottingham centre).
In the place of the paint fight we have decided to include more of the UV scene.
The other change we have made is the length of some of the shots. We have done this because we feel it makes the video fit better with the fast-paced nature of the song. Also, some of the shots we planned to film have changed because we thought of better alternatives when filming e.g. The beginning sequence.

Fast/slow reverse effect!
PROGRESS...
Here is a screen grab of our favourite shot of the music video. We filmed Aliss (actor) blowing confetti towards the camera on a mid shot. We then edited this on Imovie with "fast/slow reverse" effect and reversed the shot. We decided to reverse it quite fast to keep it in time with the fast tempo and we believe it is a successful, interesting shot. :)

Filming Session 2 - Performance Studio
These shots were taken from last Wednesday's filming session. The people performing were Hollie Dorman, me; Emma Bott and Harriet Taylor. Filming was done by Cara Wain. The dance was quite complex and fast. We didn't have a lot of time to rehearse and the space in which we practiced was small. We practiced in the girls changing room in the sports hall. The setting where we were filmed was the dance studio in college. We were allowed to use the enrichment period to shoot.
After looking through this footage, we are going to re film this because various elements e.g. seeing gaps in the curtains isn't very professional and it's not the look we are going for.
We have now decided that we are not going to have a paint fight. It's too messy and the time-scale in which we have to film is short. The filming deadline is the 1st December.

Media Lesson 15/11/10
During the lesson today we started editing our music video using the footage we filmed in half term.
We managed to get the opening sequence done and edited to the beat. So far the only small problem we have found is that the establishing shot is a bit long. However. we feel it is acceptable because it is an opening shot and as long as no more of our shots are too long. If the whole video was full of shots this length it would not fit the song at all.

Location Change
After re-considering our shooting locations, we decided that the street outside college would not fit well with our crazy graffitied garage location. To compliment this, we decided to change from a middle class estate to a run down graffitied area as we thought this would be dominant ideology of the genre.
Above is a map of where our graffitied location is located. It is a park with a basketball court in the centre of Nottingham.

D.A.N.C.E!
.......ROBO-DANCERS.......
For our music video we decided that we would like to have a trio of dancers dressed in robotic outfits dancing in unison (same time) to the beat of the music, "Crescendolls". We thought this would be a good idea as not only have Daft Punk already done this in "Around the world" with a variety of different costumes succesfully, but because we thought it would provide an interesting location change (in which we are using a dance studio) and would show that we have carfully planned our music video. It will be easy to do as I do dance a-level therefore i am used to choreographing routines plus the dancers i will be using are in my class therefor it will not be hard getting hold of them.
Our main inspiration for this is "Yeasayer - One" who are also in the same genre.
Another inspiration as i mentioned above is "Daft Punk - Around The World" due to the interesting colours and costumes.
And finally "New Order - True Faith" as the costumes and setting were so futuristic and out of the ordinary!
Harriet.
Recee - Location Three: Performance Studio
We thought that using the dance/performance studio at college would be a good idea as a setting because we have dancers in our video. This is dominant ideology and having dancers in a garage is recessive ideology.
Emma.
Recee - Location Two: Street outside college
Above are the sheets we used to assess each location we wish to film in. We took elements such as lighting and electrical power into consideration. As a group we feel that this location is suitable overall. Although it is used by the public, that use is not frequent with residents being at work during the day. The noise of the cars in the surrounding area is not a problem because we will mute the audio track to the filming and layer over our song.
Cara.
Filming Locations
The above sheet shows the address locations we are using and information on when we are filming there as well as transport links to each. We have chosen two of our three locations to be in college which makes things a lot easier for our actors to get there and for us to have maximum time filming. Our location choices are Aliss' garage, Bilborough College performance studio and College Way (street outside college). Unfortunately we can only film in the performance studio on Wednesdays after 3.30. This means we will need to film all of one scene on a selected day. We plan to film the other scene on College Way during enrichment time on a Wednesday afternoon.
The other section of this sheet lists what equipment will be required on each date at each location. So far we have chosen three dates to film which are 26/10, 17/11 & 24/11. We have already completed filming on 26/10 which was fairly successful for us, but we now need to add more dates to our filming with the studio only being available for 30 minutes each week. If we can, we will film every Wednesday until everything is finished.
